Cooking is an unnecessarily gendered skill because it should ultimately be a life skill. Having to rely on someone to give you food all the time is unrealistic and frankly unfair to the other person at times. Now, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind when you first start cooking for yourself, and this guide might prove to be useful for you.

  • Do not salt your food at the end. This will prevent the flavor from going into your protein, and at the same time, it also increases the chances of you over-seasoning your food. You should ideally season your food slowly throughout the cooking process.
  • Do not buy a lot of produce at once because that increases the chances of the produce going bad or being neglected. You should do a quick cursory search over the shelf life of different produce so that you know what can be bought for immediate cooking and what can still be used a week later.
  • If making sauces in a territory that you are scared of, then you can start with store-bought sauces and then slowly start moving towards making your homemade sauces. Making your sauces from scratch is healthier and cheaper in the long-run as well.
  • There are easy-to-follow recipes that you can try out in the beginning and since they mention portion and serving sizes, you can be sure to cook for the right number of people.
  • It is tempting to skip over the measuring cups and spoons or just confine them to baking, but they are important for cooking as well when you are following a recipe because those measurements are what allow for balance.
